As we enter this year’s theatre season, the CHS theatre class is already hard at work preparing for the fall play, Starship Adventure, under the direction of Evan Felmet, and stage manager, Zo Wetzel.
Being performed November 21st and 22nd, Starship Adventure follows the crew of a spaceship, called the Starship Adventure commanded by the determined Captain Adrian Key (Colin Jaecksch) and his loyal team, the Galactic Voyagers. After years of missions exploring outer space, the crew faces their most unexpected challenge yet. Not aliens, Not a cosmic storm, but a ship full of demanding tourists and a malfunctioning computer that threatens to pull them into a gravity well.
Junior Colin Jaecksch, who plays Captain Key shared his thoughts on stepping into a lead role for the first time. “It’s been good! I’ve felt pretty welcomed into my role by everyone”, Colin said, “I’m happy as Captain Key, and I think that I fit this role very well!”. He described the best part of being in the play as “the community that we’ve all brought together with this play.” Colin’s favorite moment is the first scene with Charlie (Rehgan Lee) and Fred (Hayden Felichko), which he described as “this huge comedic break where everything serious is overshadowed by ‘Hangryball’.” Junior Andi Bentz, who plays Lieutenant Silver shared their feelings on the show. “I like getting to explore a character I’m not used to playing. Like it’s kind of self discovery as well, in the sense of like, I can identify traits I share with Silver.” Andi’s favorite part of being Silver is getting to spend a lot of time with Charlie (Rehgan Lee) and Fred (Hayden Felichko).
While the cast of a show is essential, we can’t forget the crew, who makes the show possible behind the scenes. Senior Kyle Stull, who is taking on the role of Prop Master, shared what the hardest part of being the prop master is. “I guess making anything,” Kyle said, “I’m not very artistically inclined so that’s kinda difficult.” Kyle feels that it is rewarding to have a leadership role in just his second show, saying, “I feel recognized.” Junior Zo Wetzel, the stage manager, described balancing leadership and fun during rehearsals. “Theatre is such an important part of my life,” Zo said, “Even though sometimes I have to enter leadership mode, my number one goal is that everyone is having fun and enjoying themselves because that’s what we do this for.”
With its mix of humor, suspense, and a bit of mutiny, audiences can watch Starship Adventure on November 21st and 22nd in the CHS auditorium at 7:00 PM. Several teachers will be offering extra credit to students who attend and present a signed program (pamphlet) as proof, encouraging the school community to come out and support the cast and crew. This year’s fall play promises an evening filled with laughter, energy, and teamwork, celebrating the dedication and talent of CHS’s young performers.
