Go for green! Our very own conservation cougars have achieved an amazing feat! In the club’s effort to march towards a more sustainable future, they have received a prestigious award. The 2024 Frederick County Sustainability Commission Sustainability Award is an award given to those who have been nominated by a member from Mobilize Frederick to be a green school. This non-profit organization seeks to get schools green-certified and does educational outreach for conservation. Carey Murphy, from Mobilize Frederick nominated Catoctin High School as a green school! The award was given to a teacher, our very own environmental enthusiast Mr. Brotherton, a passionate student Gina Lin, and a group award to our Catoctin High School Conservation Club as a whole. This achievement has opened the door to a whole new platform of connections leading to possible sponsorships and partnerships. However, the club’s ambitions don’t stop here, in an interview with the president of the Conservation Club Kaitlyn Bartlett, she shared with us the future plans soon to be put into effect here at Catoctin. These plans include creating an outside classroom space for a more pleasant learning environment as well as reaching out to feeder schools to continue the green effort. She also encourages anyone who is interested in getting involved to reach out to either herself or Mr. Brotherton. No matter what you are good at, the club needs all kinds of skilled volunteers (writers, advocates, media specialists, and hands-on people). The things you do in high school follow you through the rest of your life as well as those you interact with within your life. Don’t be afraid to reach out and try new things! Quote from our own CHS Conservation Club president– “Be ready to get your hands in the dirt”!
