Music Review: Muse

Are you looking for new music suggestions? Confused on what new band to tune into? Well I have just the band if you enjoy the rock genre!

Muse is an English rock band that was originally formed in the 1990s, consisting of Matthew Bellamy, Dominic Howard, and Chris Wolstenholme. They started their career with the album Showbiz in 1999. From there, their popularity began to spike. Their largest breakthrough in society has been the release of their album Black Holes and Revelations, containing their most famous song, “Supermassive Black Hole”. Another popular  song from the album is “Starlight”. They have plenty of albums and singles but some of their key works consist of Black Holes and Revelations, Showbiz, The Resistance, Absolution, Will of the People, Origin of Symmetry, and Drones. As for the actual review, Muse is  an amazing band with  beautiful songs that can give you a sense of power and strength.  If you enjoy Radiohead, you will no doubt enjoy Muse alongside it.

Let us take a deep dive into some of my personal favourites from the listed key albums. We will start with their most popular, which is Black Holes and Revelations. My personal favorite song on the album is “Knights of Cydonia”, a song about waking up and trying to fight back — trying to make a change for yourself and the world around you. Now for Showbiz, my  favorite song on this album is the song “Sunburn”,  about moving into a new world mentally and physically. My second favorite  would be “Showbiz”, a song about how we all hide behind personalities we create for other people. It’s common knowledge that the majority of us wear social masks to hide who we really are. This is a good song touching on that topic.

Next is The Resistance, and my favorite song is “Uprising”. The song is about the massive mistrust in upper powers such as the government or bankers. Another good song is “MK Ultra”, which touches base on the brainwashing and psychological manipulation that happens behind closed doors. Then we have Absolution, the best song to me on there would be “Hysteria”. This song is about finding spiritual enlightenment.

My personal favorite album, Will of the People, contains exceptionally great  songs such as “Won’t Stand Down,” as in standing your ground against bullies. Lastly for this album, “Verona” is a beautiful song referencing love during a pandemic. One of the last two albums is Origin of Symmetry; this contains plenty of beautiful songs but two really stood out to me. “Citizen Erased” and “Plug in Baby” “Citizen Erased” is a song which is interpreted in many ways. Perhaps the speaker is losing themself in the start of spiritual ascension, feeling questioned and misunderstood, and rejecting control and power. Lastly, “Plug in Baby” explores themes of the usage of virtual reality.

For our last album, we have Drones. Two amazing songs are “The Handler” and “Psycho”. “The Handler” visit the themes of control, manipulation, and the struggle to break free from oppressive forces. While “Psycho” visits the themes of the violent nature in modern society and the abuse of men joining the workforce. The album itself is not a pretty one, as it is one of their darker works. However, it has very meaningful songs.

Touching base on it once more, Muse is known for their powerful and deep songs. They have an assortment of vocals and ranges. You can never get bored listening to them. Why don’t you give them a listen?
